Hello!
(07-01-2022 07:15 PM)DrewNicholson Wrote: ... but at $113 that's way less than anyone on ebay. The german calculator store Dynatech sells them at eBay for 72 Euros including a "Calc Case" and free shipping within Germany or directly from their online shop without case and shipping charge for 59,95 Euros (https://www.dynatech.de/taschenrechner/w.../l/hp.html). I really wonder if anybody ever bought one at those silly close-to-200$-prices on Amazon. One could get a working car for less... Regards Max |

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
Aloha All,
I'm very happy with my new HP-35s from europe. I just received my new HP-35s from Calcuso in europe, which I ordered from amazon.it late last week. It arrived on the date estimated. The DHL packaging was torn, but the internal packaging was unharmed, and the HP package is perfect. It came in better condition than the one I got from the guy on ebay who was selling "the last production run". It also came with a nice hard case, and all for some $37 less than I paid the guy on ebay - $113. Both are EMEA versions. So if you want another one, and $113 is affordable, this is probably the best chance for a while. As noted above, if you're in UK it's available a bit cheaper. I think one of the UK stores that ships to the US ends up being about $5 less after taxes and shipping, but I don't think they include the case. According to DHL, this actually shipped from Poland. Now I have to debate whether to take it out of package and remove the batteries. I went ahead and got a new 10s+ and a 300s+ arrives today so I have all three in package of the "end of the line". FYI, there are new in package 10s+ for $20 and 300s+ for $24 on ebay. I still need to get some swissmicros. And I'm debating breaking down an ordering a pre-made 34S from some person in China since I don't know when I'll get around to making a cable and the overlays will be available. I should try to find out if the person with the 34s's in China can just send one to my in laws in Beijing. I definitely missed out on a lot of cool stuff during my collecting "hiatus". ;-) Mahalo HP-45/65/67,HP-10/11/12/15/16c,HP-21/25/25c/29c,HP-31e/32e/33e/34c,HP-41C/V/X,HP-22s/27s/32sii/42s,HP-48s/gx,HP-35s,more |

Does this HP-35s have a real interest/value for an HP fan that is NOT into a collection mind ? ;-)

Hello!
(07-08-2022 09:30 AM)OlidaBel Wrote: Does this HP-35s have a real interest for an HP fan that is NOT into a collection mind ? ;-) Yes, certainly. For me it is a really good calculator with good keys and a decent LCD screen. For normal calculations at least and the occasional little program, if you have to perform a calculation more than once, and no computer or tablet running Excel is on hand. That's probably not the calculator I would use to calculate the burns required for a Mars-orbit-rendezvous, but then I wouldn't use _any_ pocket calculator for that... I would go so far and say that the HP-35S is my second favorite LCD calculator from HP after the HP-71B. Regards Max |

(07-08-2022 09:30 AM)OlidaBel Wrote: Don't you plan to open it and play with this 35s ? Aloha, I have another 35s that I play with, so whether to open this and the other two is "I'm not sure". Part of the reasoning behind this 35s was just to get something shipped from Europe. The batteries in there could damage them over the long run. Plus, I kind of want to be able to play with the 10s+ and the 300s+, even though they don't have proper buttons. I would think only a collector would truly care about unopened, but I'm not sure I'd want to buy an unopened one after 5-10 years as the batteries might leak in some way. The only reason I have a complete boxed 48GX is I could buy one when I started collecting. I'm actually surprised I didn't buy a used 48GX, but I didn't realize how different it was from the SX. I was focused on the 41 series at the time and picked up some of the others because they were available or sentimental interest from when I was younger. I simply can't describe my excitement seeing the HP-67 the first time when I was a teenager. I don't know if my infant daughter will have such an opportunity. But maybe when my kids are older we will be the ones to resurrect some of these module projects on newer FPGA's. Properly used, there is a lot to be learned with these devices. Now that I have a prime and nspire with CAS I'm delving into the philosophical implications of exact vs. approximation that didn't get discussed in middle and high school when I was that age. I asked my neighbor the physics professor if people take the effects of infintesimals into account when working with non-linear equations and since his area is astrophysics, he didn't know for certain other than that people run simulations with data sets covering a range of inputs. Of course, as soon as one uses a computer of any kind it becomes an approximation and there are errors. I don't have and have not seen a measuring device that will show me pi as a value. Not since slide rules! Once I figure out how I want to open the new calcs and not have the crappy plastic bubble look torn up, I'm sure I'll be opening and checking them ;-) It took me over 20 years to get a 10c and a 15c, so I'll do my best to stay patient. They both seem to be popping up all the time, although the prices are typically nutty. As someone else noted, these things are getting less commonly desired and prices are going down. Just a week or two ago I missed out on a pretty complete boxed set of a 41CV for only $67, which was positively astonishing. Now it seems to be the 50G that is insanely out of reach. $200 for a used 50G? That's nutty. Kind of a long answer ... ;-) Mahalo HP-45/65/67,HP-10/11/12/15/16c,HP-21/25/25c/29c,HP-31e/32e/33e/34c,HP-41C/V/X,HP-22s/27s/32sii/42s,HP-48s/gx,HP-35s,more |

I can't explain in an objective way, but it doesn't feel right. I think the biggest problem, IMHO, is the weird things I see on the LCD. Minus sign off vertical center, some weird choices and ugly drawing of config menu, and others. They chose a really strange LCD strategy: it's a dot matrix character display with a lot of characters. Why not take a small step further, and do a full, dot addressable LCD like the 42S? If they did it in the 80s, why do worse in the 2000s? It could allow software to plot graphics, it has the CPU power for it, and it could have the beautiful menus the 42s, 28s and 48s/g have. I don't care if it was made in China, everything today is made in China. The problem I see is that it feels like it wasn't designed by HP at all. This is my impression, at least. |

I do like my 35S as well for daily use and it’s the one I bring along when travelling.
So when I heard it reached end of life I actually ordered two more of it for €55 each. One spare for me and another to just keep in the box. I'm Required |

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
It may well be their last calculator with a ROM, if I'm correct? That's what I see from the SPLB31A specs, this part reference coming from an official HP factsheet (and not from Wikipedia).
It's not an EEPROM or a Flash memory, unless HP used an external component but I don't think so. And since those have a somewhat limited lifetime in comparison, it gives some extra value to the HP-35S despite its few quirks (like not being able to compute the square root of -1 directly, the limited number of labels, the general fact it's limited on purpose for exams, ...). My HP-15C LE has been built in 2011 and the flash memory in this Atmel chip has a 10-year data retention, so I wouldn't be surprised to see it fail in a few years. My HP-11C and HP-48, on the other hand, are much older than that thanks for the ROM, other good design choices and some care from its user. The lost art of making robust devices. |

I managed to get one cheap, I think I paid $40 for it. I shoved it in a drawer. Maybe it will appreciate over the years. But it’s one of the ones I’ll sell, it just doesn’t “do it” for me. |

Production of the 35S moved from China to the Philippines in 2015. C serial numbers are from China, P serial numbers are from the Philippines.
