The keyboard on the iPhone will certainly be better than that of the 41X. :)

ALL of the register address space?
I assume that the it will run the standard or slightly modified 41XC ROM's, so my expectation is ... normal 41CX behavior.

All correct. the 41X has full 41CX main and extended RAM, and can use all upper pages (including 4,6,7 but 6 is taken if you enable printing, as usual) for loading modules, plus several hundred KB of flash storage for holding modules ready to 'plug-in'. So, as for module storage, less than a CL can hold, but still likely hundreds more than anyone would want. Upper page support for RAM (aka qROM) is also available for HEPAX, etc.

There is also storage for multiple state files, off-screen images, screen shots, help files, .raw files for import and export, all of which are available via USB drag-n-drop, similar to the DM42.

There is no USB virtual HP-IL capability at launch.

So, while it is still 'only a 41CX', it extends that definition into new and different areas than have never been seen before.

It's cool. Big Grin

About why a DM41X instead of a DM42? Keyboard layout, no menus, and (less relevant to me) access to all(?) HP-41C modules.

Gene: Ah, but that is the exact reason the DM41X is > DM42 to me... the huge HP-41 software base enabled by Monte's HP-41CL.

It dwarfs the HP-42 software base. In 30 second, access to a completely different machine by loading all sorts of software someone else has already developed.

Well worth it to me, but that is only my opinion. :-)

OK, my credibility is shot when I say I won't be buying a calculator from SM. I just ordered one as well. I watched the video and the combination of possibility of HPIL via USB in future updates and the portrait orientation drew me in.

David and Michael, will you guys either

  1. Stop selling calculators that are of such high quality that I can't resist buying one
  2. Send my wife some nice flowers so she doesn't mind that I can't resist buying one

RE: DM41X
When someone gets their hand on this DM41X, can you try the Ladybug module on it? I am curious what happens with the multi-stack and multi-program line displays.

The reason is that Ladybug replaces the standard stack display and also fiddles with program lines (semi-merged steps). I doubt it will work, I am mostly curious how bad it becomes.

I am also in the process of generalizing these facilities for a coming OS extension module, so I expect that there may eventually be more modules that performs similar tricks.

Will it have RAM in the 400-FFF area (like the 41CL)? That could allow for larger extended memory as is now possible on the 41CL.

Also, is this DM41X going to be open source? As it has an ARM processor, it may be possible to make some ARM based sub-system as an addition to the simulated MCODE. I doubt that I will find any time for such endeavours, but it would be interesting to know if this will be open and allowed?

Yup. Just pulled the lever. I don’t need one, but I DO want one...

(Still hoping for my 'HP35 X', though ?).

P.s. the SwissMicos website is dreadful.

TIA,

Tim

It's particularly dreadful if you're trying to use it on a handheld device. Which is ironic for a company that sells handheld devices. Smile

Yeah, my DM41L has a hell of a time getting it to load!

RE: DM41X
Swiss Post to the US Postal Service.

No tracking number provided, so just have to be patient.
Sometimes things have arrived within a week, other times, longer.

From Switzerland to here (NL) is consistently within three days, sometimes even two ... Swiss Post is really efficient.

True. I had a package that came from overseas and I tracked it to Plattsburgh, NY (about 80 km away from Malone, NY) Then it went to Memphis TN (about 1980 km away) before coming here to Malone. Sounds really efficient to me!

Normal delivery time from Benglen/Zurich/Switzerland to Montreal/Quebec/Canada is 5 to 7 days.
My DM41X was shipped on 2020-01-21 so the fun should start early next week. Smile

RE: DM41X
Deliveries to Michigan tend to take about 2 weeks once I get a shipping notification, give or take a couple of days. I think that's pretty typical for most orders to the US from what I've seen.

Mark Hardman might disagree with you on that point Smile

Mind you, Texas is not Michigan... His DM42 only arrived after 5 or 6 weeks, and then it was covered in fingerprints on the screen and the remnants of a program were still in it. Clearly, customs officials decided to open the package, play with the calculator for a while and thought it had a touch screen!

Well, there's certainly no accounting for whatever weird things customs decides to do with it as it passes through.
