HP-35S Discontinued?
A listing on eBay for an HP-35S from Eldorado Trading Company says it's from HP's final production run. Eldorado has been a trusted HP Dealer since the 80's (possibly even the 70's?) and likely would be informed if this were actually the case. The fact that this model is not among those appearing on the "HP Licensee" websites that are emerging supports this too.

I'm not sayin', I'm just sayin' what they're sayin'.

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
Sad news. I know many here are hatin' on the 35S, but I bought it as soon as it came out because my first HP was a 35. IEEE Spectrum had a great article from an interview with the lead designer on the physical construction of the calculator when the 35S first came out. Let's hope the recent news from Gene (oops, from Dave!) means we'll see a more suitable replacement in the new year...

Nothing conclusive by just saying what they are saying...

The HP-35S was introduced to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the HP-35

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
An anniversary edition of an anniversary model would be unique and well-appreciated. Smile

An HP-35S+ with fixes for well-documented bugs, plus a few small enhancements (R< > P) would be an excellent small step into the world of new HP machines from the Licensee team. Such changes would require small tweaks to the keyboard, thankfully preventing whiney owners from asking for ROM upgrades... Wink

It would also be nice if you could use complex numbers in all the places you can't use them now.

If they put out a properly debugged HP-35S successor, I'll buy two.

Don't forget a better display, with larger decimal dot and without the infamous mantissa display beyond LCD limit

This! Take the reciprocal of 3 with the display mode set to ALL and you see the following. Who decided that was ok? I typically leave it set to FIX 4 to avoid this issue.

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
From my business logic standpoint, if HP really decided to discontinue the 35S it is either that a replacement model is on approach, either that it does not makes any more business case.

Regarding the business case, there is currently a huge availability issue regarding in particular, but not only, electronic components pushing car makers all over the world to stop production lines for weeks or even months.

I believe that we can reasonably assume that HP supplier of the 35S is impacted also at some points for some of its components and maybe be asking much higher prices, minimum order quantities, production lead time from order, hence impacting further the business case for the aging 35S ....

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
For what it is worth, I noticed the other day they where selling them in El Corte Ingles (an Spanish department store) at an unusually low price, 40 euro.

Also, it was surprising to find them in the super market section of the store, where you would normally find only Casios and more basic HP models.

edit:
I think it is official. Went back yesterday and the tag on the shelf now states "Last Units" and specifically indicate that the current price is 50% off.

And yes, I took one this time. I could not help it.

Pity I know only now.

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
My understanding of the HP 35S
1) keyboard typical HP (good)
2) no external saving of programs possible (SD, USB, RS232 to PC..). But perhaps I misunderstood.
3) looks a bit more modern than an HP41
I have one (only for the RPN) for helping others during school works because I dont know how to use the complicated TI calculators.
It will be gone? all fine for me. As long my HP41 is working.

HP71B 4TH/ASM/Multimod, HP41CV/X/Y & Nov64d, PILBOX, HP-IL 821.62A & 64A & 66A, Deb11 64b-PC & PI2 3 4 w/ ILPER, VIDEO80, V41 & EMU71, DM41X

The part that immediately came to my mind the other day was “I can see the red tail lights heading for Spain”.
“They say Spain is pretty though I've never been”. I've never been there either, but I do believe this is true.

RE: HP-35S Discontinued?
By the way, there's a Walmart Seller (Photo4Less) that's still selling NIB 35's for $54. That's a good $10+ less than the eBay and Amazon prices right now. Just got mine the other day and it was in perfect condition, including sealed HP theft detection strip still in place.

HP-35+ with the fixes, polar/rect conversions, and perhaps a USB connection part... a guy can dream. Smile
