RE: Stuttgart HP Meeting 2024 (replacement Allschwil)
Good Morning everyone,

due to a family emergency that developed tonight, I wont be traveling to Stuttgart until later in the day. I'm currently arranging for the support and care required for the family member and have relatives coming over in the next couple of hours.

I'm very sorry that this is probably wrecking havoc on the agenda, but as Bob said in another post:

"Family first, then work, then play, then noble contributions to the play community. Keep this essential order in mind!"

Until later,
Jan

Stay healthy and keep calculating,
Jan

Pascal, a big THANK YOU for taking the time to set this up as well as managing a quite fluid agenda - it was great fun to meet likeminded people from all walks of life.

I noted the enthusiasm about the computer museum visit at Uni-Stuttgart and I found this sequence to share with you Video-link

Unfortunately for the non-German speaking, it is all in German…BUT, you can turn on the auto translate, it is not perfect, but decent

RE: Stuttgart HP Meeting 2024 (replacement Allschwil)
Thank you to all of you for this incredible meeting. My talk about db48x was quite a bit longer than expected, but I hope that this select audience still enjoyed it.

I came back home with a "new" HP71B, which kept me happily occupied during the flight. Unfortunately, back home, it started exhibiting strange symptoms. The four leftmost columns would "duplicate" each row with the row immediately above, i.e. typing f would give me CAT, g would give me lowercase c, z would show ZA, A would show AQ, and so on. Really weird. Unfortunately, that seems to also impact the ON key. Getting the machine to switch off took me several tries, since f would give me CAT ;-) I could finally switch it off, then back on, same problem. INIT 3 did not fix anything.

Removing and putting the batteries back made the problem worse, i.e. now the machine won't even switch on.

Anyone has any suggestions on what the problem might be and how to fix it?

The root cause of the problem may have been the pouch. It looked really nice on the outside, but the inner fabric inside seems to have gotten bad with time, and when I took the HP71B out of the pouch back home, it was covered with a fine black smudgy powder. I hope that this did nto get into the keyboard and cause damage.

In any case, any idea welcome. The result is that I returned to DB48x and implemented USR mode. Not complete yet, but will be in the week-end's release.

Also, I went to the other retro-computing event today with my daughter, and purchased a nice PC1212, complete with printer, a case/stand/box and an application manual full of old BASIC listings. Not sure if it work, but for 20€, I should not expect too much.

I was really nice to meet people as crazy as myself. See you next time.

Pascal, Thank you once more for the organization and timekeeping this fantastic event. Both the hardware and sofware enthusiasts could find very progressive lectures. Special thanks for all attendants for doing it all in English only for me.

I have transferred all video files from the memory cards to my PowerBook and backed them up. However it will take a few days until I can edit them and put them online. But they will come eventually!

Thanks for filming these sessions Max, I'm looking forward to watching them.

And thanks to Pascal for arranging the meeting! I would have loved to attend, but it was not possible this year, perhaps at an upcoming anniversary meeting.

RE: Stuttgart HP Meeting 2024 (replacement Allschwil)
Dear All,

A big thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of the first (but hopefully not last) HP meeting in Stuttgart. It was the first event of this kind for me and, what can I say, it was GREAT fun. I have never seen so much enthusiasm and knowledge (and so many 71B's ;-) ) gathered in one place.

It was great and at the same time a little wistful to see what fantastic functions HP calculators could have today if HP had continued to develop in the field of calculators in the spirit of Bill and Dave - thank you, Christoph.

I was also particularly impressed by the insight Maximilian gave us into the unfamiliar field of navigation - a big thank you to him too. This big thank you also goes, of course, to all the others who gave us fantastic insights into their work with HP calculators with great attention to detail and hard work.

I look forward to seeing you all again next time.

Best regards

Karl

RE: Stuttgart HP Meeting 2024 (replacement Allschwil)
Unfortunately, I could only be present during saturday. None the less I was very pleased to see and hear that I have some co-patients suffering the same decease as I do... interest of HP calculators and handheld computers (HP-71B). First of all thanks to Pascal for organising this meeting in Stuttgart. Second, thanks to Maximilian for the very interesting presentation of the different navigation calculators! I wasn't even aware of there existence! As I recorded the presentasion by Maximilian of the navigation calculators, unfortunately I wasn't aware of zooming to the max viewing the presentation screen... as I recorded the online presentation of the TULIP module by Meinert, I used the zoom to focus on the presentation. When I manage to copy the recording from my camera to the computer, I'll send my recordings to Maximilian. Also thanks to Christophe for showing me the DB50G! Very interesting. I would like, if SwissMicros would put this model on the market!

My personal oppinion: It was a very nice meeting... but I had to travel 12 hours by car (6 hours each way) and I was present only saturday from 9 am till 4 pm. As the meeting took place in Allschwil two years ago, I had only twice three hours driving by car and we were about 20 participants... this time we were 9 in Stuttgart. Therefore I'll have to evaluate and decide whether the long journey is worth it for me or not.
Wish you all the best and hope that we'll keep the contact between us!

Martin Pedersen

When not Allschwil, then Stuttgart. I am ready for organizing Stuttgart again.

Nomore Allschwil? then Stuttgart again or somebody else can jump in the organization for an HP EU mainland meeting.

I had other feedbacks that convinced me that Stuttgart attracted people who would not have go to Allschwill (the other way round: Allschwil too far for some).

So: lets see if we reach 21 people at Stuttgart next edition.
We were 10 in Stuttgart first edition (9 in the room + 1; Meindert in the conference).

RE: Stuttgart HP Meeting 2024 (replacement Allschwil)
Hello!

Regarding the videos from Stuttgart last weekend we made almost all the mistakes Eric had warned us about :-(

The first day we used my (mainly photo) camera Panasonic Lumix DMC GX-80. I did not know it at the time, but the camera can either charge it's battery or take photos/videos, not both at the same time. So even if I had it connected to the charger all the time, it kept running off the battery and I had to swap batteries every half hour or so. Luckily I had brought a spare battery and an extra charger. But this means, that there are seveal ca. 1 minute gaps in the recordings. And initially I had set in on autofocus because i wasn't aware that photo and video mode have different settings for that... So you will see a lot of annoying focus chasing in the first half of the video.

The next day, Martin joined us and brought his camcorder. Unfortunately, things really went wrong when we used that. It recorded the first minutes of my talk to the internal memory and then stopped. We had insterted the 256GB memory card that I bought the day before and Martin switched the camcorder to "external card". It seemed to keep recording without obvious signs of discomfort, but the memory card is completely empty. Nothing on it at all.

So this is the situation re. videos from Stuttgart:

1) I recorded part of Karls talk, but he aked not to be shown on the internet, so this will not be available, because I can't cut him out of the video completely without using valuable content. Maybe he can make a pdf or something from his slides?

2) I am about to finish a first cut of Christophe's talk on the DB48X. Apart from some gaps due to battery change everything is there. It had a horrible colour cast due to the red curtains of our venue, but I remembered that ca. 7 years ago I had paid for an online couse of DaVinci Resolve and my subscription is still valid. So I could re-learn how to do rudimentary colour grading... This talk is 2:30h long! Christophe wanted to record his slides in parallel whilst giving the talk, but for some reason this did not work, so for the time being, we only have what I took.

3) Like Karl, Pascal asked not to be shown on the internet with his talks from Friday and Saturday, so we did not even record them. But maybe he can give us his slides as pdf?

4) As already written, some minutes of my talk from Saturday should still be in the internal memory of Martin's camcorder. He will send it to me. The rest is lost, but Keynote on the Macintosh allows you to talk over the slides and make a film from that. I will do that in the near future, but you will miss all the antique calculators that I passed around during the talk...

5) Meindert's talk on his Tulip boards was delievered via Zoom (at least I think it was Zoom) and was hopefully recorded on his side, because otherwise we have nothing.

So for next time, whether at Allschwil or Stuttgart, we have some homework to do with regard to video recording!

Regards
Max

Sorry, I did not record the session (which was in Teams). And despite preparing it I had a setup issue with Teams which did not allow me to share the OBS output stream for the demonstration.

Regards, Meindert
