Is there really no solution to remove this thin layer "gunk" without remove the faceplate symbols also? Maybe some petroleum based solvents? I guess alcohol based things will also remove the faceplate symbols...

The Radio Shack version of this model is pretty bad too. I think it's got the same plastic layer you're talking about. Keyboard readability is lousy. Plus they made some rather weird (and not good) changes to the programming language, with the bizarre use of FixM, { }, and =, which persisted through the fx-4800P and fx-4850P. Thankfully the fx-5800P went back to the more traditional Casio syntax seen on the graphing calculators.
