Is there really no solution to remove this thin layer "gunk" without remove the faceplate symbols also? Maybe some petroleum based solvents? I guess alcohol based things will also remove the faceplate symbols...

I think have a small success to remove the gunk. I use what is called "Fotogen" in swedish, i think the english word is Kerosene. I applied it and let it sunk in some time, and then i can bit for bit get the gunk junk off. But its a slow process. The faceplate symbols seems to stay intact at least.
