For the Purple Square boxes, I believe the lighter /thinner color box is the original 1981 design, but I can be convinced otherwise.

(I also see the 15C came in thinner 38mm boxes as well as the 43mm box)

It's possible the thicker cartons are for the earlier spiral bound manuals, and the thinner one reduced in size due to the perfect bound manuals).

The earliest Voyager boxes used black for the model number, switching to using the same color for the text as the squares later (the first of a lonnng list of cost-cutting changes, 2-color -> 1 color).
