Copyfitting
An excerpt from Browns Index to Photocomposition Typography, Greenwood publishing, © 1983, 1e, ISBN 0 946824 00 2, pages 289-317
These copyfitting programs are to be used in conjunction with the typefactors shown on previous pages and a pocket calculator. The programs are divided into three sections each with its own index page as follows: index to single lines of type page 291 index to body text page 295 index to running text page 805 The variables, or parameters, that need to be known to operate each program are indexed from A-K on each index page. If, for example, the user is calculating for a single line of type and wishes to know the measure that the setting will make, then by reference to the appropriate index the procedure is as follows: solid bullets in the table indicate parameters that are known and a question mark indicates the unknown quantity; the measure is indexed as G and by referring down this column in the table the unknown quantity may therefore be found by using program 5; additionally parameters A, C and E (ie typefactor, number of characters and typesize) must be known in order to make the calculation possible. A sheet for recording alternative calculations has been included on pages 318/319. It is intended that disposable photocopies of this record sheet be made and used in conjunction with the index pages and copyfitting programs. It should be noted that the programs in this book have been specifically devised for use with the unique typefactors also shown here. The programs cannot reliably be used with any other method of copyfitting or typefactors. BEST! SlideRule |
