The old 65 Notes contained a novel approach to R/W a clipped magnetic card: a worn / used/ etc. magnetic card was trimmed on the right to MATCH the vertical profile on the left of the target clipped card. The trimmed card was then gently inserted in the card reader slot from the left and the clipped card was inserted from the right. I used this technique, it works! If you have access to the old Notes, the article is thorough and replete with illustrations, etc. If not, I'll elaborate in follow on dialog.
I also simply pinched a small piece of tape to the clipped corner with the same success. Both methods worked for me and should help you troubleshoot the clipped vs unclipped mystery.
