HP 35s screen flickers
Hello HP/RPN fans !!
Please excuse me as I am here for the first time and might be posting at the wrong section or asking something that has already been discussed. I am using the 35s for about 8 years, recently find that the display brightness is flickering at a constant pace. I dont see it if viewed perpendicular to the screen, but if viewed at about 45 degrees, it is more pronounced. I even tried replacing battery, putting in the best Made in Japan one but no improvement. Thanking you in advance. |

Did you try a fresh set of batteries?

RE: HP 35s screen flickers
Do you get the flickering when viewing in daylight? I’m wondering if it’s a strobe effect due to high speed flicker from artificial lighting.

Have you upped your consumption of coffee lately? I am sensitive to flicker (that guy at the office who increased everyone's CRT refresh rate) and I notice it more when dosed with extra caffeine.

RE: HP 35s screen flickers
I had a cheap Casio watch which, in strong sunlight, could be seen to flicker at about 8Hz (estimated).

Problem Solved !! and Nigel you are a genius. Took the calc near a window and lo..the problem is solved. The display was as steady as it could be. I work in a dark room and use a desk lamp for illumination. Recently I changed the bulb from incandescent to fluorescent and seems that since then this issue started. Brought the calc back under the same lamp and flickering resumes :-) Believing that its dying..I just bought a 50g in panic from ebay..money wasted :-( Thank you everyone for your thoughts. Mait |

Use the 50g for a while and you'll start thinking that the money spent on your 35S was wasted I currently own three 50g's and I had to think for quite a while before deciding that snapping up a fourth one that appeared on TAS yesterday wouldn't be reasonable... |

Put it this way, I'm 50 years old too and I bought my first 50g maybe 18 months ago. I'd already owned a 28S and a 48GX before then so I already had a head start with RPL but still knew nothing of the 50g's specifics. Since then I've also dabbled in SysRPL and Saturn ASM (the 50g has the wherewithal to assemble source code built in). It's a lot of fun, really. |

RE: HP 35s screen flickers
Delighted that your problem is solved! I like the 35s a lot.
However, I like the HP-50g even more. Assuming that you're used to RPN from the 35s you should be in for a lot of fun. Nigel (UK) |

I think you'll find the 50g offers some very nice functionality, and if you are at all interested in programming, there's a tremendous amount of resources available to you in that regard. If nothing else, just hang on to the 50g for a while. The value will probably go up since it is no longer in production. You could always sell it later at a profit. |
