3D Printed Overlay for DM42, DM41X ...
Hello,

enclosed please find the source file (.skp for SketchUp) and the .stl data for an overlay for the DM4x hardware.

I have also attached photos. I have however rotated the enclosed 3d files after printing these specimens so that a new print will put the rougher side below and the smooth side up.

I have used the Swissmicros specifications for design:

https://technical.swissmicros.com/graphi...y_DM42.PDF

I hope you find this useful.

Greetings,

Andreas

Very nice! If one was able to switch filament colors mid-print, then legends should be possible.

Prusa i3 MK2.5S & MK3S/+ Multi Material 2S upgrade could do up to 5 colors...

3D printing legends in different color

Don't be afraid of editing .gcode files. If your slicer can show layer-by-layer, then you can figure out when to insert a pause to switch filaments mid-print.

I have a Prusa MK3S which after this weekend will be a MK3S+. I believe you can schedule manual filament changes in the slicer software without the Multi-Material upgrade.

I ran a quick test, see attached. The results could be improved by using a smaller nozzle than the 0.4 mm used here and perhaps PLA vs. PETG (used here) which is a little more stringy.

Almost to the point of 3D printed double shot keycaps! Things are looking up!

It ain't OVER 'till it's 2 PICK

RE: 3D Printed Overlay for DM42, DM41X ...
In addition to the ability to change colors at a specific layer, it is also possible to approximate double shot keys by using a color change mid-layer. Essentially, you print all of the key backgrounds, leaving letter-shaped holes. Then you pause, change filament, and continue the print, which then fills in the letter-shaped holes with the second color.

I have a video bookmarked somewhere showing the entire workflow for doing something like this, if anyone is interested.

Whywould you have to switch mid print. Just do it in two passes.

RE: 3D Printed Overlay for DM42, DM41X ...
It depends on how thick the print is, i.e. how many layers. If you go more than a couple layers between switching colors then the nozzle will drag on the outer layer.

Ideally you print layer 1 color 1, layer 1 color 2. Then layer 2 color 1 layer 2 color 2, then layer 3 color 1, layer 3 color 2. etc.

I want to replace the mainboard of mu printer with a dual extruder for dual colors.

Since this thread began I now do two prints, one over the other. The first one is one layer high, the second print is printed on top. See the photo.
