HP9114A Replacement Battery Box HP88014B
I finally acquired a lovely tidy HP9114A portable disk drive (HP-IL), courtesy of a nice chap in Finland. This is to be used with my HP41CV and HP71B setups, over HP-IL. However, unfortunately the battery box (HP88014A or B) was missing.
It can be run from a cable (supplied) using an external 6V power supply, but I do like things to have their original facilities.
So I located some suitable connectors and decided to design a replacement plug-in battery box in OpenSCAD. I finally 3D-printed the bits out and put it together, after a lot of iterations, as you might expect.
It's just a battery box with 4mm terminals and a fuse, but it's exactly what I wanted. It clips into the 9114A exactly like the original. The original charging circuitry has a reputation for mis-treating the battery, so external charging from a suitable device is preferable. You can even trickle charge the battery while running.
I produced an alternative front panel as well, to allow the original HP power connector (from a scrap printer) to be used, but that would need suitable electronics inside. I put in pcb supports just in case.
The parts take about 10 hours to print, so I'm probably not going to turn this into a commercial proposition!
If anyone wants the .stl files I may well stick them up on Thingiverse.
Who knows - someone may need one...
-Jeremy

I sacrificed one of my 88014 battery packs to make a "plug" for an external switching AC adapter. Your solution adds the battery which maintains portability without needing a charging circuit.

Very nice!

Maybe one of our 3D printing experts can spiff up the stl files.

The OEM connector is Cinch S-302H-CCT, which is now obsolete.

What did you find as a replacement?

I would love to have a copy of your STL File.
I am in the same situation. I have a 9114 with no battery.

I was going to model one in Fusion 360 this weekend and try to find a suitable battery and connector.

The .stl files would be much appreciated! OpenScad also, your decision of course. I would like to ultimately replace the limited life sealed lead acid battery with a more durable solution.

Perfect. That's simply the panel-mount version of the connector.

I was searching for this connector, $20.00 USD for the part but $40.00 USD for shipping, before duty and taxes on my end, very interesting but way too expensive for me. Sad
Fortunately, I now have a part number that I can use to find lower cost supplier.
Thanks!

RE: HP9114A Replacement Battery Box HP88014B
A question for the .stl experts here.

I designed the box with all the parts "in place" so I could make sure everything fitted correctly. Simple switches in the code allow each part (or everything) to be selected.

So when I do the .stl for a part, I still have to rotate it in the printer software to get it to sit in the correct position for printing. The front and rear panels sit vertically in the design, then have to be rotated and printed flat. the box sits horizontal and needs a vertical flip.

So, do I need to produce .stls with the piece in the correct printing orientation (I can do this with a few more lines of code) or are most 3D printers capable of doing this re-positioning?

I'm happy to share the OpenSCAD via email if anyone here wants it but I don't want to publish it (yet). I will probably put the final .stl files up on Thingiverse so anyone can access them.

BTW I have three spares of the panel-mount battery connectors I used (two are used, one new). $10 each including postage to USA or Europe, £6 to the UK. Paypal is fine, as long as I dont pay fees.

I'm pleased that this project has aroused some discussion.

The orientation of the .stl can be rotated in the software tool used to slice the .stl and generate the gcode file for the printer (also OpenSCAD can do this).

OK, that's useful to know. I use a Cetus3D which has proprietary software so I needed to clarify it.
In the end I just added the relevant switches into the OpenSCAD code to allow for the design and final versions, so the final stl files will all be correctly orientated.

RE: HP9114A Replacement Battery Box HP88014B
I'm a little concerned by power being delivered by banana plugs. Usually power is delivered by connectors with female contacts, so they can't be shorted by a rogue screwdriver.

Another observation, many 6V adapters come with a 2.1x5.5mm barrel connector. For example:
https://www.amazon.com/SMAKN%C2%AE-Switc...ref=sr_1_4

Suggestion: Replace the banana jacks with a barrel jack, similar to this one.

RE: HP9114A Replacement Battery Box HP88014B
I'm having more concerns with this design. It seems that the DC adapter for the Battery Box can only be used to charge the battery as the adapter current necessary to power the 9114 would be too high to connect to the battery. A charging circuit would be needed.
So, either the battery can be charged with a charger like this one, https://www.power-sonic.com/product/psc-6500-pc/, or the battery can power the 9114, but not both.

RE: HP9114A Replacement Battery Box HP88014B
A side question, I have my HP88041b battery pack, with the top lid removed, on my workbench and I charge it from time to time. The circuit board has a green LED that flashes and eventually turns stops flashing and is on 100% of the time. I assume that this means the battery is charged. I'm puzzled as to why the LED exists at all as one will only see it when replacing the battery.

Maybe it was used during production testing.

All points noted. This exactly why putting ideas up on this forum is so valuable!
1. I'll do a version of the front panel with a single 2.1x5.5 socket instead of 4mm sockets. The 4mm sockets were convenient as I never put a high-current source on devices like this. I envisaged an external psu giving say 100mA (limited) trickle charging current which would still be fine as the battery would supply the bulk of the current when the disk drive was operating. For initial charging I used the incredibly useful RipMax Pro-Peak Prodigy II all-in-one charger. £60 new but only £15 secondhand on Ebay.
2. I could stick a small 100mA current limiter inside the pack and that would allow any external source to be used.

Any other comments gladly accepted. I've passed a copy of the OpenSCAD source to Craig Bladow and am happy to pass it on to anyone else who fancies modifying this design.

What I use for the 9114 can be seen on my "sales" page.

https://www.mh-aerotools.de/hp/sale/index.htm

I have one charger cable, but usually I use the box insert with a simple straight-through connection to a 5,5/2.1mm barrel jack for a simple 6V wall wart.

I obtained the Cinch-Jones connectors from Mouser, but that was about 5-10 years ago.

Jeremy,

Thanks for posting this, I printed one and you design is excellent the fit and finish are great. I have some inline style of the internal connectors but I think I can make them work, now if I a fit a small power supply inside I will be all set.

I think I posted this in a previous thread. I use one of these to power my 9114.

I have an issue with running 120/240 VAC to the 9114.
