The double dot is so you can enter 3.4 (real 3.40000) and 3..4 ('3/4') on the same keyboard without changing any modes. Using single dot you'd be forced to enter 0.3.4, which is OK I guess, but not much better than entering '3/4' directly.

Actually .3.4 (same as in HP35s) is enough
