list of compatible 48s,sx doner lcds for replacement?
I heard that a 49g lcd will work but does anyone have the complete list of compatible doners for lcds? My 48sx display finally bit the dust. Sad

Thank you!

I have a hp-48sx with a lcd from a hp-40g in it. It is very clear display like that of the last hp-48g+. How such an exchange goes, I unfortunately do not know. The SX was already so when I got it.

Thank you. I did some more digging and apparently the 39G with the black type LCD will work so I bought one for $25 and will perform the transplant. I already have the 48sx apart without any visible damage. Keeping fingers crossed that the rest will go smoothly!

any of the Saturn based calculator LCDs will work, specifically these models below:

38G, 39G, 40G, 48G/G+/GX/S/SX, or 49G

I transplanted a black LCD from a 39G into my 48sx, and it looks might fine!

Thank you for the comments! I just finished the transplant. Used the 39G display. Its looks great compared to off low contrast blue of the original 48sx display. So now my 1989 purchase is back in operation. I do like the 48sx better than my hp prime. The prime is not bad but wish they would have supported HEX/DEC/BIN/OCT base conversions the way they did on the hp48->hp50 models... Likely someone wrote an app to do that but I currently cant find one.

That is one beautiful 48sx! Well done!! It is so satisfying to see a 48sx upgraded with the black LCD. Now, if we could just make it faster easily!

Thanks! It is funny how satisfying the process was and to now see that nice high contrast screen after all these years. The little things in life. In thinking about the speed ... I suppose someone could try overclocking experimenting with the Y1 xtal but then the time/rtc and uart might all run too fast if that's their time base. I did not check that with the scope to see if it was the main 4Mhz source or just the 32768 Hz. I think I'll just have leave that one alone and just admire the screen for a while Smile

Here's a great one:

But the 48SX, and especially with a Black LCD, is a much better machine IMHO.

Happy to see the improved contrast 48sx display.

The icky blue, icky low contrast display has kept me away from owning a 48sx. But goodness, the steps to swap to the better display is in my opinion, tough.

I agree 100% on the comments, opening the case is a PAIN. the 91%-95% rubbing alcohol approach to easily remove the bezel is an approach to success with patience. Just soak in 1/8" upside down overnight and then maybe a little longer tilted to specifically loosen the area around the display (the most glue). Then rivets can easily be drilled after faceplate removal. The faceplate survives with NO bend or creases and can be cleaned of remaining glue with more soaking by itself and reattached at the end with double-sided thin sticky tape. You can also put the unit post bezel removed into a 125F degree oven for 4 hours to evaporate out any of the alcohol left under the button snapdomes. Still though, the edge clasps require an auto door panel tough plastic pry tool.... Then instead of trying to remove the old display from the metal frame just cut out the old metal display at the two thin side posts where they attach to main frame. Do the same on the donor. That way you dont need to mess with removing the LCD from the doner frame and reattaching the target LCD frame and regluing it. Its faster, easier, better IMO. Lastly on the ribbon for the keyboard, buy a conductive ink pen and build up the black ink contact points with two coats of the new conductive ink and clean the gold contacts with the same rubbing alcohol. That will clear up any possible contact issues for the keyboard ribbon and the main PCB after re-assembly. .... yeah that is still a pain!
