Posessed HP-71

I just put some new lithium AA's into my HP-71, and I am sure that it occasionally beeps.
(As I was typing this, I *think* I got a "WRN:Configuration" message" - it was gone pretty quickly.)

Usually, I don't catch anything on the display.

Anyone else experience this?

I did do an init:3, but that did not help.

Yes, with FRAM71.

It happens when more memory is installed than can be configured.

Also, when installing batteries in the 71, be aware that the bottom row of keys are active even when the 71 is OFF. Accidentally pressing ENTER, for instance, can cause errors and warnings.

I don't have FRAM71 and only 1 32K RAM module. (I find it hard to even *type* 32K!)

I believe the "WRN:Configuration" stays on the screen until you dismiss it, (typing could do that too though) but it's been a lonnng time since I saw that so not 100% sure. Also, if this were the case, it would be shown every single time you power-on until the configuration is corrected, so it's easy to check if this is the case.

You can review the last error message by pressing g-ERRM.

It seems to have stopped. The batteries were really low when I changed them, so maybe it was a temporary confusion.

I have done a few INIT:3's.

Good news, I agree, when batteries are quite low, all sorts of strange behavior can ensue.

When you want to really reset a 71B, remove all modules and batteries, and short the 2 outermost pins in the CR slot. I've never seen this fail to clear any residual memory or similar problems.

I would be impressed if you managed to get 4 L-91 cells into a 71b. The voltage drop off for AAA / L92 has a very sharp voltage drop off near end-of-life, and could possibly cause brown-out or under-voltage conditions.

At 10ma constant current discharge while running (room temp 21 C), the capacity (mAh) of AAA Lithium is the identical as AAA Alkaline, which might not justify the extra cost?

Lithium really excels at low temperatures, high current, or burst current loads (camera flash).

The extremely technical reason I got the Lithium AA's is that they were what was available in a 4 pack at Home Depot when I remembered I needed them. 8^)

However, as I was wondering if I should get them I thought the extra long shelf life would be a good thing for the HP-71, since I rarely need to change the batteries.
