Hp 82164A versions
Through EBay, I’ve just received an 82164A HP-IL/RS232 converter. According to the included manual (82164-90002, March 1983) there’s a jumper that can be flipped between DTE and DCE connections on the 25-pin connector. DTE is the “as shipped” default.

My unit has no such jumper, and an RS232 breakout with LEDs suggests it’s hard-wired as DTE (i.e., TD on pin 2). A label on the circuit board says 82164 (no “A”).

Was there a version prior to the “A” version with no DTE/DCE jumper? Inquiring minds want to know.

I don’t mind that it’s fixed at DTE - I can work with that.

Did you open the case? The jumper is on the inside, on the board itself.

Of course. How could I have seen what was printed on the circuit board otherwise?

It is not a "jumper", it is a "jumper unit" like a little IC with lots of jumpers. Here is the picture from the manual:

If you *don't* have one of these, send us a picture of your board.

Just for the record, here is the inside of my unit, no "A" that I can see:

You just remove the entire jumper block and flip it around so that the notch points to whichever mode you want...

I’m well aware of what the manual shows. That component is simply not there on my board, nor are there pads or traces for it. It’s very clear that there was a design change during the production run, and the manual describes the more recent units (or possibly what fell into my hands is a prototype, before they decided to add that feature).

I should have taken a picture while I had the unit open; I’m reluctant to open it up again.

Really? It's just a few screws on the bottom...

The normal one is *made* to be opened.

I showed you mine, now you show me yours. 8^)

Oh, and to answer your question, I don't think anyone has seen any other version of the converter, which is why we are so curious to see inside yours.
