Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
I've owned HP 28C and 28S, and 32S - but those are sadly gone.
I currently own HP 48GX, 50g, 12C, and two 15C CEs But this will be my first SwissMicros. I've been waiting for the 42 release with the better hardware specs. Can't wait... Much to learn... |

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
What do we know about the DM42n compared to the previous? I'm seeing USB C connection, faster speed x2 a bolder font and updated Free42? Anything else of note?
Hard to to choose against a DM32. |

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
USB-C is a big one in my book because i nowadays have more usb-c cables around then micro-usb. Also the doubled Flash memory. The increased speed is not so important. I also own a DM32 so i can choose what flavor of calculator i am in the mood for the day.

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
Another possibly important difference is much larger RAM space. On my 42, there is ~32K RAM available, while the 42n has ~415K RAM (neither is empty, but you get the point). So a huge difference if you use a lot of programs, or huge programs and/or data (like big matrices).

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
I'm hoping I will be able to run DB48X on it (or is it DB50?), and also hoping that I can switch back and forth to the OEM firmware - but I have to figure out how all this works - I'm a complete newbie on this stuff.
(Since I grew up on the 28S, I prefer RPL over RPN programming) |

As the author of DB48X, I was curious too, so I asked SwissMicros, and they told me that anything that runs on a DM32 should run on the DM42n. So that would be DB50X (DB48X is the exact same software at the moment, but built for the DM42). Please report your findings. DB48X,HP,me |

Doesn't DB50X require the DM32 keyboard with two shift keys, yellow and blue? The 42n still has the 42 keyboard with only the yellow shift key. To run DB50X on the 42n would require key stickers and a new bezel (or a memory much better than mine!) Tom L Cui bono? |

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
I'm also deciding between a DM32, DM42n, and a second-hand DM42 for a bit cheaper.
Pros of the DM32: * Faster hardware * Unit conversions easily available (e.g. °F to °C, lbs to kg) * DB50x target with 2 shift keys Pros of the original DM42: * Cheaper * Supports C47 as well as DB48x * Matches free42 * Classic Pros of the DM42n: * Faster hardware * Matches free42 Is it possible to buy a DM42n or a DM32 and cross-flash it to the other firmware, with just a new keyboard overlay? Also, has anyone actually used DB48x on the DM42n yet? Thanks! |

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
I have ordered an DM42n from Swiss Micros. I think I will be switching calculator-programming to that new machine from the HP41CX to use named variables (instead of memory registers) and the enhanced features of the free42 that are currently implemented in the DM42n.
Looking forward to learning more about the new DM42n at the HHC2024. I am packed and ready for my Lyft ride to the airport. For those folks who are attending the conference, I am looking forward to seeing you and enjoying the "Geek Fest", as my wife calls it. Namir |

Though the 42n sounds nice I think i will go with the DM32 for the same reason. I'm more of an RPL guy than an RPN guy these days. |

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
Me too. Took a few days to decide whether to go for the DM42n or DM32. Seems as if it's the same hardware but the keyboard layout is different. Ended up going for the DM42n because the DM42 has been around longer so there's more alternative firmware and keyboard bezels available. Also bought a C47 bezel. I like that the DM32 ischock full of functions but I managed to convince myself that the simpler looking DM42n would be more utliitarian. Now I'm like a kid waiting for Xmas. Pathetic in an apparently grown adult. And yet I don't care.

RE: Just ordered my first SwissMicros... DM42n
I don't yet own a DM42n, but I would like to order one. When I compare the photos of the DM42 and DM42n, I don't like the new bold font that much. Is it possible to change the display font?

Is it possible to change the display font? The DM42 and DM42n use the same firmware codebase which allows you to choose different font sizes. See the following video review at 5:38 as an example: https://youtu.be/91kD-gPvWNU?si=Kh7d2ZVtapY1sCfe&t=338 You can also change the relative font size (+/-) of each line on the stack if desired. See: https://technical.swissmicros.com/dm42/d...font_sizes |
