Since you have been using a HP48G+ for the past 18 years, i think a HP-50 is a great choice and is much better than a TI-89 which is still largely the same model that was introduced in 1998.

I can't think about not using RPL, I'm really used to it.
Like I said before, I've never used a TI and have only seen it on the internet but it looks like a step behind the HP in terms of materials.

I apologize, I forgot from your initial notes you've used RPL for many years. No question moving to 50g is a good move. MUCH faster, more capable and many more functions. The keyboard layout will seem very busy and confusing at first, but your fingers will regain their muscle memory pretty quickly. Also, much has been written about the "small Enter key in the wrong place" but this too is really very easy to get used to. And once you do, the 48 Enter key will seem odd.

I have the TI 89 titaneum emulator for android. It is nice, but not comparable to the 50g, IMHO.

The TI-Nspire CX on the other hand is a huge seller in the US. Great competitor to the 50g and Prime at the same time.

Hi, I've just received the 50g and I'm really pleased. I'm trying to solve the formula I have upload but I get the "invalid user function" error. I wrote the equation on the equation writer and tried to EVAL it but nothing. Any clues?.

Yes, I've tried but I get the same error, I think that maybe there is a variable that is not working the way it should.

Make sure to use multiplication signs between variable names and before an opening parenthesis, e.g. write k*h*(9f+4h) instead of kh(9f+4h).

I've found the problem, rookie mistake. For example in a equation: 4k(f+h) I didn't include the multiplication symbol before the parentheses "4*k(f+h)" instead of "4*k*(f+h)". It seems everything is working now.
BTW, the difference of speed between the 48G and the 50G is amazing.

Speed is not all... of course if you fancy graphics the Prime is from far better.
Note the 3D graphics are not even native... this is a user application.

Had the Prime before and moved on the 50g.
Have no regret though the 50g is thick and ugly.
The day we have a dark Prime with a Saturn emulator that runs the 50g ROM, I may reconsider my choice. But for now don't spoil Cancuino's joy with fallacious videos, he did the right choice.

You're invoking the computer algebra system. Sadly HP didn't find it profitable to include a printed manual but there should be documentation on the CD and HP's web site.

The 50G is a very powerful instrument but being a massive superset of the 48 series it will require some getting used to. I would consider getting a package called HLP49 at the very least - it's an online function reference and help system for the 49/50 series. There is also a fellow on this board who has made some printed 50G manuals, who may or may not make another run but it wouldn't hurt to post to that thread.

Speed means a lot to me because the Prime is now my pocket PC. It would be very cumbersome to solve PDEs, ODEs and perform heavy calc stuff on a machine like the 50g. I like it very much but RPL is not very useful for particular cases as these.
Having some experience with Matlab/Scilab/Octave, I find HPPPL very useful and easy as it is a bit similar to the programming languages of these applications.

I will have to disagree with you on this one too. I think the 50g is prettier. I also like the leather case better than the plastic case on the Prime. A matter of personal choice.

Of course he did. But that is not gonna stop him from trying the Prime emulator when or if he needs speed.

I've seen that kind of videos Marcio but I think that speed is not the main difference between the 50 and the Prime, they are completely different machines and being programming my main concern I think the 50g is a great calculator.
Besides, I'm used to my old 48 so anything above it looks like airspace technology to me ;D.
