new HP watches, $350-$700

Adjusted for inflation, the Chronowing is lot less expensive than the HP-01. However, i don't see any indication that it has a calculator. Also it doesn't appear that you can write apps for it.

The Movado Bold Motion is stylish, but without a high-resolution display it doesn't seem all that useful.

That Chronowing is sure ugly. That dedicated "subdial" really eats in to the display area, and the display resolution seems low from the pixelation of the characters.

It goes for 7 days on a charge, which is relatively good but also quite poor, if you all ready have enough stuff that needs charging all the time.

That's why I decided against a smart watch. My Casio Lineage runs on solar power, synchronizes with an atomic time base and comes with alarms, timers and the like. That's exactly my usage pattern.

I've such a watch too, it's really nice. However the alarms are useless, because I can't hear the frequencies

Unfortunately "smart watches" are toys. I much prefer to get real swiss made, all mechanical premium watch that I can give my grandson for $700. Edit. I would be willing to pay $350 for miniaturised (in sane measures) pocket calculator that do everything that 50g does though.
