If you find CAT 6 (or any other CAT) to be too fast, simply do f CAT 6 R/S. You need to press the R/S immediately after pressing the 6. That will pause the listing, and then you use the SST key to single step thru the key assignments. Note that if you're a bit late pushing the R/S, you can always do the f BST to do the single backstep to back up the listing.

I have bought both the DM41 as well as the DM41L and really like both of them. I especially like the long-life button batteries instead of the N batteries required for the HP-41CX.

Your ebullient review of the DM41L may cost me money. ;-) Support for loadable ROM images would certainly put me over the edge. The good news is that it wouldn't be much money. I was very surprised to discover the depreciation of the franc vs. the dollar when I used the currency conversion feature on SM's web site. What is the world coming to?

RE: The DM41L is here!
I just received my DM41L today, and it has a weird problem: all keystrokes actually enter the key to the left of the key that's pressed.

For example, pressing "5" enters a "4" on the display, and pressing "x" enters a "6".

Resetting the calculator hasn't changed this bizarre behavior...

You should re-flash the operating system. If that doesn't help, your hardware may be broken. I'm pretty sure Michael will send a replacement board so that you can do the repair yourself.

EDIT: I think I know what has happened to your calculator: It's got the wrong firmware image installed, probably the DM15 image instead of the DM41 image. If you look at the photos on their website you'll notice that the number keys on the DM41 are shifted one column to the right compared to the other voyagers. With the calculator turned off, press and hold The 'E' key and then press ON. You should see the firmware info on the screen.

Marcus,

Close: it has the DM41 (non-L) firmware installed.

Sadly the firmware files for the "L" version aren't posted on the SwissMicros site...

RE: The DM41L is here!
In further news, SwissMicros sent me the correct file, but I can't get the firmware updater to work: running the program and pressing the RESET button on the calc merely causes it to display SERIAL CONSOLE, but nothing else happens. Sigh.

UPDATE: The problem is that my DM41L has the WRONG KEYBOARD. The keyboard overlay is correct, but the physical keys are from a DM15L. Maybe I have a Valuable Collector's Item!

I was thinking that the hardware is identical for all machines. I may be wrong. The firmware for the 41 and 41L should is the same.

If a reset sends you to the serial console, there might be a key permanently down. You should open the device and try to flash it outside the case.

The firmware file is in fact the same for the DM-41 and DM-41L; but since the keyboard is still wrong, I'll wait and see what SwissMicros does. I'd have to take it apart to change the keyboard anyway.

How about posting a picture of your unit?

I guess the keyboard frame is enough. The one in the picture is from a DM15L.

RE: The DM41L is here!
According to my observations what you called 'keyboard frame' and what doesn't fit in dramsey's calculator is pretty well fixed at the keyplate. Let's see what he gets.

RE: The DM41L is here!
Saw these Calculators on the EEVBlog and ghee am I soo tempted.

Is it too much to ask if the DM41L supports synthetic programing? In theory if you can save and restore programs via USB then you could just as easily edit them to substitute synthetic instructions. If the microcode and virtual register structure is identical then there is no reason why not.

I am long time owner of the 41 - since maybe 1982. I also had the 15C but it was stolen.

Yes it does - sort of. You can create the byte grabber using the standard method, I keyed in LB using it as well, but it had some problems running. I might have keyed it incorrectly, but I did it multiple times. I don't recall the exact profile of the problem, but I got multiple MEMORY LOST conditions playing with it. Those could also be due to operator error, but maybe not. Crashes are more tolerable on this machine because you can load and save the calculator state easily over USB.

Howard

RE: The DM41L is here!
I received my first Swissmicros machine (a DM15L) a week ago. Really happy with it, it is better that I expected so I'm now thinking about getting a 41L. Is there, definitely, no way to load ROM module images on it?

Does it emulate a 41C, CV or CX?

Thanks & regards.
