On my Sony Z3 compact tablet (Lollipop) I just have this on the screen and no soft or hard buttons outside of the display :

I don't know how to get the preferences menu.

Hmmm. Read that newer android phones mostly come without these buttons but Galaxy kept it by holding down the App capacitive button. So on my phone you can still get the menu.
Is this the reason why the new Free42 had the top bar menu option? Must be a way to get to the menu in another way on your phone.....

Yes, there is a way.

On my LIFETAB S7852, Android 4.4.2, should you conceal the action bar & then wish to reinstate it you need to: delete the app & reinstall.

ie Don't conceal the action bar!

Not a problem on the tablet as the screen is large enough.

RE: Free42 version 1.5.7a
There is another way: the go41cx way. You can have the app competely full screen with no status or button bar, and then you can get the menu bar with a swipe from the bottom of the screen to the top. If only it could be the same for free42.

On my Nexus 6 with Lollipop, the standard Android buttons stay visible. There's also a menu thingy. "...", at the lower right that gets you back into the preferences.

It appears there are still problems for some folks but I gotta say, this is a great responsive change. Thomas Okken has always worked with great dedication on this extremely capable and useful tool, which runs on every single platform I know. He then gives it away under the GPL so we can actually enjoy it on whichever computing platforms we need or want to use. Bravo!

Regards,
Howard

RE: Free42 version 1.5.7a
I tested the new "style" selector on the Android Emulator running Android 4.0.2, and on a Nexus 6 running Android 5.0. On both of these, No Title and Full Screen modes have the "three dots" menu icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, in the navigation bar.

I don't know why the navigation bar would disappear on some devices; the Full Screen style should only remove the status and title/action bars. Hiding the navigation bar requires an entirely separate OS call, which Free42 never makes.

If there is no visible three-dots icon, you *should* still be able to access the menu by long-pressing one of the navigation buttons; typically the task switch button, but I've heard from people that the other buttons are also used on some devices, so you may have to try them all.

That only works in the iPhone version.

Hello Thomas, thanks for free42 and your support. However I don't have the three-dots icon with free42 while I have it with any of they goxx emulators such as go33c:

And I don't have access to the menu with a long press on any of the three navigation buttons...

I have a Sony Z3 compact tablet with Android 5.1.1

Aargh.

OK, I looked around a bit, and apparently whether or not the menu icon appears depends on the targetSdkVersion in the app manifest. The target version used to be 1.5, but I changed it to 3.0 in 1.5.7, thinking that was necessary to make the action bar work right.
Now I'm reading that the menu icon is *supposed* to be hidden in 3.0 or later, which is certainly consistent with what you are saying, but not with my own tests -- and the Android Emulator and Nexus 6 both run stock Android, no less.

Like I said, aargh. :-)

I'll see what I can do. In the meantime, you'll just have to choose between living with the action bar or living without the menu, I'm afraid.

I can live without the menu. Once the app is configured with the needed skins I don't need to change the settings. And if I need then I can delete the application data to get back the action bar, no need to uninstall/reinstall it.

Exactly the same here.
