As far as I am aware, there are existing Spanish calculator forums - perhaps it would be possible to start a Spanish HP Prime sub-forum on one of those. Also this forum was established by a private individual (located in the USA) as a facility for calculator enthusiasts to communicate and share ideas. It is up to him to decide - so if you wish to take it further, I think this thread belongs in the Forum Issues and Administration sub-forum. Lastly I have no issues with other people's use of English - so no need to apologise for "bad" English. (Footnote: the only time I have criticised is one particular non-native English user who thinks he has the right to criticise the language/spelling of "native" English users. I use native in " " because people living in English speaking countries are not necessarily native English speakers). These are my opinions of course, but explain why I vote No. |

Spanish (7.8%) i.e. on the internet English is 3.5x more prevalent than Spanish. |

RE: Subforum in Spanish (Español)
Hello.
I speak italian, but I find the posts in a forum should be in an international language, a language everybody understands. If I were to publish my posts in italian there would be only a minority of people who could understand and answer. I think every engineer, scientist, student in scientific branches, studies english in the school, some scientific books are only available in english. So english is the language that more people understand and speak. This is not a literary forum, so it is not a big problem if the posts are not always grammatically correct. Someone add to the post a translation in their language (french, spanish), this is very good, so other people can check if the question / answer is clear. I also find very useful to have to read and wright in english, so I can always exercise it. If you don't use a language you will loose it. Regards Reto Ambrosini |

RE: Subforum in Spanish (Español)
Actually Dave (the owner of this site) original intent was for a Hp calculator museum. That he has expanded to include the NEW Hp Prime was somewhat of a surprise to the many old timers here. And I don't speak for Dave either, but he does a pretty good job of moderation (with help from others too), and he would probably have to acquire even more help to moderate other languages (tempers flair, spam, inappropriate postings).
. So, I suspect you are asking for a lot, to have him provide yet another forum, in a language he cannot moderate easily. |

RE: Subforum in Spanish (Español)
I moved this thread to a a more appropriate forum for further discussion.
Personally, I think that introducing non-English language sub-forums is going to open a huge can of worms and complexity. Most people here are very patient with posters that have poor English skills and occasionally switch to their native language to ask an important question. I think that this is the way it should be. -katie |

However you continue to list incomplete information. What about the UK and Australia? Not to mention Spain and Portugal? Let me put another perspective on it: List of countries where English is an official language List of countries where Spanish is an official language List of countries where Portuguese is an official language The English list far exceeds that of other languages - this is not about native English speakers but what is the most common language that people can communicate in. We may not like it, but that is how it is. |

Katie and retoa have the right answers! (It's not a lack of sympathy or a lack of respect, but a practical advantage to have a single-language forum. As pointed out, other forums are out there using other languages)

You can subdivide by calculator: fine, by technical subject: fine, by programming language: fine, but any non-technical issue is not a good reason to split, much less language or cultural issues. I don't think anything good will come out from segregation, and I write this not to upset anybody, but so it's clear to Dave that even people who speak spanish as a native language don't agree with a spanish subforum, and if he creates one I will keep communicating in english out of respect to other members of this community, I believe they have earned that over the years. About the number of people being "native speakers", just the fact India uses english as second language should put an end to any argument about that, so stop counting already. Just my (strong) opinion in this subject. |
