Jim - This is a known issue (seen more on the Beta machines) and the solution is quick and easy. Remove the back case (remove 2 screws at top and then lift the cover back off, releasing tabs on the bottom) and then slightly loosen the screw holding down the board just behind the ENTER key. You may have to try this a couple times (slightly loosening and/or tightening) until it feels right.

Yeah, the DM42 satisfies in just about every way.

You can customize the graphics seen when you power off by simply changing the images (including ones you create/modify yourself) in the OFF Folder (details on the SM Forum pages).

Have fun exploring!

Hi Robert - removed back cover as suggested. However the screw holding the pcb is not near the ENTER key. Loosening and tightening the screw above the ENTER key did not have the desired effect.

RE: DM42 News
It did not work in my case too as the screw is 2 to 3 cm above the Enter key.
So I removed the PCB and loosen the key by pressing it more deeply, being extra careful not to break the 2 pieces of plastic it is attached with.

To do so, I had to remove the connector on the top for the screen and reattach it after. This is not hard but you have to be precise because it is hold by a small piece of plastic which you can loose.

It worked perfectly and you can do the same for the other keys you find too hard to press.
Now my keyboard is ok. Not HP-67 like but ok.

Hmmm... it appears that SM moved the screw location for the production configuration, probably due the very problem with Beta machines as I described.

My production machine does not have this problem so I had no reason to open this one; I should have checked to be certain before posting.

Pascal's suggestion seems like the next step, though others have also reported needing to (carefully!) temporarily pull up the membrane to clean small debris in-between the layers preventing consistent key-press results. Check details on the SM Forum on how to do this if Pascal's suggestion doesn't work.

Let us know what works in the end.

I have the same ENTER key behavior but honestly didn't notice until I read about it here so I don't believe it will bother me.

That is a nice collection of OFF images on the DM42 forum that Bob mentioned.

I'm really enjoying the DM42!

Try CC41!

S/N 727 arrived in Greenfield, Indiana today. I like the heft and feel of this calculator. Display is crisp and sharp. What a fine machine, Michael. This has been worth the wait!

RE: DM42 News
So how does the keyboard feel compared to the DM1xL models? Is it identical? Or closer to the original hp calculators?

Cheers,
Harald

RE: DM42 News
I can't compare to any of the "L" versions, as my only other Swiss Micro is the credit-card sized DM-15CC. But I will say that the feel is different than any of the old HP calculators, such as my HP-45 and HP-25. The DM42 feels closer in firmness to my HP-50g, with slightly shorter key travel.

@Jim - Someone else just posted on the SM site about the same problem (Enter key not clicking/feeling right) and Michael's reply was to adjust the screws that hold the board down. Originally, advice was to loosen the screw nearest the Enter key, but perhaps more than one needs to be tweaked? It's easy enough to try. Please reply with results, there seem to be a lot of new DM42 owners asking about this.

RE: DM42 News
Hi,

Regarding DM42, I was wondering:

1/Why not keeping Free42's printer simulation by redirecting its output to the large screen on demand, with scrolling arrows ? Could be quite useful for plotting programs and program tracing !

2/Is the physical 82240 IR printer really supported ? If yes, how was the code modified, as Free42 does not use the 82240 control characters and escape sequences, but direct output ?

Thanks and cheers,

Vincent

The DM42 definitely does support printing to HP's 82240 IR Printer, it works exactly as expected, with better range than an original HP-42S.

Your suggestion to have the printed output be redirected to the LCD has recently been discussed on the SwissMicros Forum. Proposals for future changes should probably be made there, as these forums include frequent participation by David and Michael (the D and the M in DM-42).

Here's a sample of printing to the 82240B printer. The A model doesn't have two character sets.

Thanks to both of you.
Amazing printing result.
I guess this was done using XTOA and PRA...
Since free42 does not use control characters/escape sequences I guess they were reintroduced somehow ? The PRLCD command would not work otherwise...

Cheers

Vincent

RE: DM42 News
On a slightly different note, I was just thinking back to the infamous HP-67CX April Fool's Day spoof from years ago. Looking back at what would have been an unimaginably powerful calculator back then and realizing that today we can have the very real DM42 that leaves the capabilities of the HP-67CX in the dust, and for less money. How great is that?

Well worth getting the IR printer. Use it for Low Power Panamatik Woodstocks, HP-42DM, HP-41CV, HP-42, HP-50G, HP-28S... Very multifunctional...

I did not think that the 50g has a compatible IR? Is there a mod that I missed?
