It's not too bad if you have another working system into which you can place the cartridge into to do the tedious bit after rethreading the tape. That is what I do when testing my 9875 tape drive, I can use either my 85A or 9825T to rewind it. Of course, that doesn't help if you don't have another drive...

Your correct,at last count about over 100 hp hand helds, but only one 9825a option 2 with a tape logic problem.

The spooling off is due to the EOT light bulb not working. Does someone have a source for these? One website says they are about 2 mm in diameter and "easy to acquire". I believe they are driven by 5 volts.

I replaced the bulb, which has a diameter of 3 mm with HP part number 2140-0221, NOS I found on eBay. That restored EOT detection, however my silicone tape capstan fix only held out long enough to mark a tape.

I now have a working drive as I used 10 mm heat-shrink tubing on the capstan.

Good to hear this. Congratulations.

A word of warning for anybody taking the tape drive out of the 9825:

Be sure to record the way that the ribbon cable is connected. It can go in both ways and if you get it wrong, the blue smoke will escape.

In my case it took out a power transistor in the PSU and a chip in the tape drive. I was lucky to be able to repair this so my 9825 now works OK.
