HP 12C "Gold" calculators (as they're called on Amazon.com listings) sell there for about $35. Flash 15C firmware and get a poor person's 15C? Smile Even after HP 15C CE production finishes...

but Chinese or Philippine version ???

Today: [Graphics: hp 48G / hp 50G / TI 89 Titanium] [Business: hp 10BII+ / hp 17 BII /hp 12C ] [Scientific: Casio fx 570 ES plus 2nd Edition]

To satisfy the curiosity, I've ordered it with delivery by Sunday. Let's wait and see what is sent.

This is the listing: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000YVENS/

The product image shown may be an old one as this listing was created in 2008. It's sold by 3rd-party merchants, so what one gets may be from a mixed bag. I am assuming that Amazon would mostly have recent stock as "New", so that should be the Moravia made-in-Philippines model with a screw in the battery door. The price looks too-good-to-be-true considering the price history of this model. It may be listed cheaply to clear old stock with 1 or 2-year old cells that may need replacement at-purchase to avoid the risk of leaks.

Let's see.

There are 2 review photos. One shows 3 cell, the other 2.
So yeah, definitely seems like it might be a dice roll.

Eagerly awaiting your update.

Yeah. I stated very clearly what needs to be looked for here.

https://www.hpmuseum.org/forum/thread-22...#pid194801

Those that just hit a buy button without looking/reading could be disappointed.

I got lucky. There were no photo's of the rear of the calculator but everything else matched and the price was very low. So I took a risk and won Smile

Hoping for a good outcome may or may not work. Most 12C's for sale cannot be "converted" to HP-15C CE's.

Good morning Jase

Based on my expectation of what I would receive, I had ordered 10 of these. Today a courier woke me up to deliver 2 of them. What better than waking up to a new model of calculator in the morning.

What I received is what I expected which is a recent made-in-Philippines Moravia HP 12C with the screw door, connector.

There is a gold sheen on the faceplate in the brushed metal finish. It's hard to capture this on the camera, but it's there even in sunlight. The lettering on the backplate is also in gold. Maybe that's why it's called gold. I have never had any previous models of the 12C, perhaps they were similar too.

The display on this model is much better than on the 12C Platinum. The bundled pouch is also nicer (similar to what is bundled with the 15C CE) than that of the 12C Platinum.

Same USB vendor/product IDs as HP 15C CE, but it calls itself a 10BII. I didn't get anything out of it using my voyager-save.py program posted in the VoyagerSave source code thread. It likely needs firmware support. It would be good if Moravia updates it to implement saving/restoring memory. I read somewhere that a common pattern for this calculator apparently is that companies program the calculator and hand them off to non-technical staff. But this may be old usage, as I suspect many financial workers would use computer software now such as spreadsheets, company's internal web applications, etc.

Who knows what's in them? Worth checking though. It only takes a short time to do and post the results but...

PS: Pressing keys through the clear plastic packaging is possible, I just did it with my 12C+. Some eBay sellers may do it. Others not. It doesn't hurt to ask.

Is it just mine or is the 16C mode prone to hanging/crashing? I've been able to make it freeze several times within just a few minutes of poking around.

The 12C+ doesn't have a 16C mode to my knowledge. If yours does please say so. That would be of interest.

Apologies, I'm referring to the loading of 15C CE firmware on 2022+ 12C units and then switching it to 16C emulation (just as you can on the 15C CE).

Thanks for clarifying.

Perhaps reading/post to a 15C CE thread would be more appropriate. Not everyone reads posts of no interest to them.

Sure, I'll help answer your curiosity and share pictures of the version information. Here you go:

https://imgur.com/a/UsxJM44
https://imgur.com/a/QSfYpCj
https://imgur.com/a/BOiwJNA
https://imgur.com/a/dGSOdR4

It says "Made in Philippines" on the back. It has a screwed battery door and a pogo connector. The packaging cover says it's by Moravia. If that's not sufficient proof that it's a current gen 12C from Moravia, there's just no convincing. Even the pics won't help, because what if a scammer flashed a bogus device with some custom firmware that showed the latest version?

All that matters is if the buyer is convinced if he received what he wanted, and in my case I am convinced I did.

p.s. Apologies if I am stepping on anyone's shoes. I was curious about the Amazon.com 12C "Gold" listing and decided to order, but I was convinced I was buying the current model and ordered several. I am trying to be helpful in sharing pictures to show what I received. I'm satisfied with it.. if anyone else isn't satisfied with the story, I don't care.

I too noticed hangs needing resets when I tried the 16C mode, but didn't investigate it further. Frankly the 16C doesn't appeal to me (I am a computer programmer). The stock 15C is good enough for me. Smile

You photo's prove that. But that isn't the issue. It is known that "rogue" 12C firmware has been released, probably via Moravia, so IMO dm319 asked a perfectly reasonable question. The last known good firmware is also known.

it is not a "rogue" but a 12C+. So the search goes on...
