HP 32S 50th Anniversary Edition production numbers
Does anyone know what the production numbers are? And maybe also for the standard 32S and 32Sii?

Do all anniversary editions have the old display with slightly smaller characters?

I was lucky to aquire a mint example 2 days ago.

The lighting could have been better, but it has been raining here all day. So here is just a quick shot of the 32S Anniversary a standard 32S and the 32Sii that brought me through school.

HP-32S-II / SN:ID94210261 / bigger  LCD / Indonesia

Thanks for the serial numbers! That is interesting!
My Anniversary editon has 2909A10254 (I guess all of them had a 2909 number). The other 32S has 3051S03029. So apparently a fairly early one from Singapour.

But what I was actually wondering was, how many were produced.

Hello Harald,

From our limited sample, it seems that the calculators made in USA has the smaller LCD and the other ones has the bigger LCD.
I suspect it's not by model but by manufacturing location.
If we expand the sampling to all the pioneer with single line display models, we should see the same result.
I have all the models here, I will look later today and see if my hypothesis is valid.

From my initial observation, the models with a flat bezel have the smaller characters and the models with the recessed display, the larger characters.

The 14B and 32S anniversary edition were available to HP employees and stockholders only as mentioned page 31 in the Measure issue from March/April 1989 available here. In 1989 there were 95000 HP employees according to the 1989 annual report available here, but we don't know how many ordered a 32S anniversary edition.

RE: HP 32S 50th Anniversary Edition production numbers
I believe the 50th Ann. Editions of the 32S and 14B were released when these models were introduced, which is why they are the earlier flat-type (smaller) LCD.

After some production time, HP introduced the late-style models with the recessed-style (larger) LCD display from overseas factories.

The 32S, 27S, 42S and 22S all were released in both early- and late-style LCDs, similar to the 32SII, 17BII, 10B and 20S being released in early- and late-style color schemes.

I have no production numbers, just figured all this out from samples I've collected and seen.

BTW - I'd like to know if anyone really has an HP-22S with the late-style recessed LCD. Photos of them exist, but I'm not aware of any actual units in the wild.

I'd have told my father to order one at the time, except that I had no clue about their existence, nor of the offer... well, I got my HP-67 at the time... I had a HP-12C too Smile.

HP-22S RecessType2 Brown

I have seen the photo of the late-type 22S here on the museum, but never seen one live. Do you have one or just recall seeing one? I'm still wondering if they were commercially produced.

Along the lines of these machines coming in different styles & colors, a recent post elsewhere here pointed out something I never noticed (though I own both). The very late 19BII with the rear door was actually produced in a different color scheme than prior 19BIIs. The case is a darker brown/close to black (similar to the darker case of the late 10B/20S/32SII/17BII) and the keys are also different colors. And the panel on the left above the alpha-keys does not provide the simple help for several key functions, rather it explains how to select the user-language, in several languages, so maybe this late model was only released in a multi-language version.

Of the 21 pioneer case variant above, until yesterday, I had 15, but now 17 Smile in my collection and actively searching for the missing 4 including the 22S recess.

I was aware of it, but just to sure I just checked with the ones I have, and of course, you are right, as usual.

I have 20/21, still looking for that elusive recessed 22S... as is Dave, and several other members here.

Anyone really have one, or are we searching in vain???
