RE: Are PIL-Boxes still available?
Quick update - the prototype boxes are performing well and a few design tweaks have been learned. The next design iteration is done and in the process for a beta run of units. As soon as those arrive and pass testing, I‘ll reach out and make sure people get their boxes asap.

Cheers,

PeterP

RE: Are PIL-Boxes still available?
Hi Peter,

Yep, count me in as well for one (or two?) of the new PIL-Boxes.
I'd probably go for one of the pre-assembled ones rather than a kit.

Thanks,
-Jeff

Looks fantastic. I want one as well. Don’t really care about the price (within reason).

Yes, software will be the same for now.

That's great to hear!

My which list (as for now) would be complete if the DM41X had HP-IL capabilities over its USB connector - someone from SwissMicros reading this?

Cheers!

I'm curious... is HPIL used anywhere in the real world? or is it just we old-timers who just want to play with it again?

RE: Are PIL-Boxes still available?
How did you decide on the 78601/1JC, other than the fact that it's the first that comes up on digikey when searching for general-purpose 1:1 pulse transformers? Smile

I've read through 82166, and I didn't see any guidelines for picking the pulse transformers.

It’s how we HP71B fans connect stuff to our devices.

HP-IL has been in use in the HP 5890 Series of Gas Chromatograph under the name of "INET", long after the end of the HP-IL for calculators.
For long, spare boards for these products were a source of HP-IL components.

I selected the transformer based on Hans Brueggemann's measurements, see here.
If interested, it can be worth to read the entire thread, there are a lot of information on the subject.

Hi John,

I'd say that the HP-IL module was essential to communicate with the HP-IL printer (HP 82162A) and the mass storage device (HP 82161A). Anyone who has one of those needs the IL module. There were also other devices such as the video interface (HP 82163), serial interface (HP 82164A), GPIO interface (HP 82165A) etc. I personally own a digital multimeter with HP-IL connectivity (HP 3468A).
Apart from those old-days devices, the recent HP-IL box offers a serial connectivity through USB. The software bundle from Jean-François Garnier and Christoph Giesselink allows the connectivity to and within a computer (via TCP/IP). With this it is not only possible to get data to and from the computer but it would be therotically also possible to e.g., read out a device in Tokyo, print the results in Cape Town, store the data in Buenos Aires and control this from New York - that is the HP-IL loop taken to its extremes.
Maybe not something essential in the real world but a convenient tool that outsiders would categorize as toy.

Cheers
Frido
